Çelebi Hungary, the biggest Turkish investment in the country, provided financial assistance to the victims of the “red sludge disaster” that occurred when toxic waste flooded from a burst reservoir at a chemical plant killing and injuring several people. About 35.3 million cubic feet of sludge leaked from the reservoir and spilled into surrounding villages located across 16 square miles. During the disaster, which affected humans as well as the natural environment, the risk of toxic sludge to spill into the Black Sea through the Danube had alarmed the neighboring countries.
